Comedy Writing for Sketch (& a Bit of Narrative)

Sunday Oct 22nd 10am - 4pm $90

In this one-day intensive, we will explore approaches to sketch comedy writing through improvisation, structure, message and more! The day will simulate parts of the process of being in a professional television writer's room (but a nice one). We will tackle pitching, premise generation and refinement, group writing, format, shape, style and exercises to flesh out participants' unique comedic voices. Leave with potential material to get your sketch writing package together or at least some new tools to attack it!

BECKY JOHNSON is a Canadian Screen Award winning writer and comedian. An alumna of the Toronto Second City Mainstage, Becky has performed internationally with her influential improv projects including Catch23 Improv, The Sufferettes and IRON COBRA. As a writer, Becky has contributed to Baroness von Sketch Show, The Hour Has 22 Minutes and CBC’s Because News. Becky has also been a panelist for Canadian pitches at JFL Comedy Pro’s Stand Up and Pitch competition. As an actor, Becky has been featured on Baroness von Sketch Show (CBC/IFC), What We Do in the Shadows (FX) , Odd Squad (PBS/TVOKids), Workin’ Moms (CBC/Netflix), Space Riders: Division Earth (Funny or Die) and more. Becky has won two Canadian Comedy Awards for her work in improvisation and two Canadian Screen Awards for writing on Baroness von Sketch Show. She is currently commissioned to write the book for a 90’s Grrrl Rock Musical in collaboration with songwriter Hank Pine for Atomic Vaudeville in Victoria.

Over this 5 week course, the students will further utilize the clowning skills and the characters that they discovered in the Clown 1 - “Le Jeu” workshop series, to focus on and develop their

very own original clown act...aka “Turn”. While broadening their comedic horizons through the exploration of improv, slapstick humour, and mime technique, these students will create a

physical comedy act that really works, and at the end of this course, will get to present it as a performance piece to the enjoyment of a live audience!
